Property for sale in Palmanova

Palma Nova, it could be said, just about sums up Mallorca’s amazing transition from an agricultural island into a tourist mecca. It seems incredible now, but there are still people who can remember ‘New Palma’ as just a tiny fishing village. Today Palma Nova is an extremely popular seaside resort. Located in the west part of Palma Bay in the south west municipality of Calvia, Palma Nova comprises a shallow bay with three fine beaches: Son Maties, Na Nadala and Es Carregador. Around here you’ll find a huge choice of hotels, shops, bars and restaurants. There is also a lively nightlife scene in the warmer months.

A little history

Palma Nova was one of the first purpose-built tourist destinations to spring up on Mallorca. As far back as 1935 the decision was made by local worthies to transform the little fishing village into a full-blown tourist resort. Things were put on hold during the Spanish Civil War but construction work resumed in the 1950s. The resort really came into its own in the 1960’s and 70’s and remains popular with holidaymakers to this day.

Things to do in Palma Nova

Palma Nova may not be 24/7 but it certainly is an all-year-round tourist destination. There are many British ex-pats who have set up holiday homes here and there is a wide range of bars and restaurants open all year round. More affordable than some of its rather exclusive neighbours such as Puerto Portals, Palma Nova remains one of Mallorca’s top holiday destinations.

Beach lovers will adore Palma Nova with all the watersports on offer as well as the chance to lounge on a sunbed and let the cares of the world drift away. There are plenty of family activities to be enjoyed here such as the mini golf course Golf Fantasia set amongst landscaped tropical gardens and waterfalls. For yachting fans, there is a small marina on the Son Caliu side of the bay.

Boat trips are also a popular choice in Palma Nova. Generally lasting about half a day with swimming stop offs, usually food and drink is included in the ticket price. The ‘glass-bottomed boat’ is also very popular with the children

Theme Parks

You’re never short of a family theme park or two in Palma Nova and its environs. A prime example is the Katmandu Theme Park often regarded as the finest on the island. Look out for the spectacular ‘upside-down house’ as well as a waterpark, a magical house and, of course, mini golf. (For ‘proper’ golf there are lots of options available locally too, particularly in Santa Ponsa and Cala Vinyes.)

And don’t forget the impressive Western Waterpark. Here you can spend a fun-filled day enjoying attractions such as water rapids, a wave pool, and a 15-metre water slide.
If performing dolphins and sea lions are your thing, a visit to nearby Marineland is a must. They really do know how to put on a show here. In addition to the dolphins there is a shark aquarium and an underwater tunnel!

The kids (and grown-ups) will also love nearby Karting Magaluf where a wide range of go-karts are available for hire.

Palma Nova almost certainly has every type of shop you’ll need on holiday. Beach shops, souvenir shops, newsagents, convenience stores, large supermarkets…it’s all there right on your doorstep. Should you fancy a bit of high-end shopping, a short taxi or bus ride into the capital Palma is most definitely recommended.

Palma Nova Nightlife

As regards evening entertainment, you can’t do much better than pay a visit to the famous Pirates Aventure Show. It’s a spectacle designed for all the family with performing acrobats, special effects dazzling dancers and lots of laughs – a real hoot! There is also an X-rated ‘adult’ show which includes a live DJ.

Stunning nature parks

Even though Palma Nova is the ideal Mediterranean beach resort, Majorca’s compact size means you are never far from some of the island’s beautiful nature parks. The nearby Tramuntana Mountains are rather spectacular too, and very popular with hikers and cycling fanatics – particularly in the cooler months.

How to get to Palma Nova

Palma Nova occupies a prime position on the western side of the Bay of Palma and is easily reached by taxi from Palma International Airport (about 30 minutes). There are also regular buses to nearby Magaluf, Santa Ponsa, Portals Nous, Peguera, Andratx and of course the island’s capital, Palma.
