Puerto Andratx

Puerto Andratx – justifiably famous

Puerto Andratx is just… delightful! Often regarded as Mallorca’s prettiest port and fishing harbour, the romantic setting overlooking the bay and surrounded by tree-lined hills has a unique charm acting as a magnet for visitors from around the world.

Located on the south western coast of Mallorca, Puerto Andratx’s large horseshoe-shaped bay has been described as being one of the most beautiful harbours in the whole of the Mediterranean.

The sunsets here are to die for, casting long shadows around the bay. Evening is the time when the town really comes to life; a well-heeled crowd filling many of the excellent international restaurants around the harbourside.

This really is upmarket Mallorca. Pay a visit to Puerto Andratx and you’ll find some genuinely impressive property dotted around the wooded hillsides overlooking the bay. The town has a great attraction for the yachting crowd too, Andratx Yacht Club enjoying an international reputation in nautical circles.

However, despite the rather wealthy laid back atmosphere of the town, Puerto Andratx is still very much a working fishing port and retains a somewhat old world charm.

A little history

The petit old town of Puerto Andratx reflects the area’s maritime history, and there are a few ancient defence towers here originally built to ward off invading pirates. But apart from this and the church of Nuestra Senora del Carmen, the town is very much a mid 20th century development.

As tourism took off in Mallorca, Puerto Andratx drew people to its shores, many deciding to live here. Today you’ll find an interesting mix of bohemian celebrities spending time here in their holiday homes.

A superb restaurant scene

Puerto Andratx’s old town is a fabulous place to relax over a leisurely meal and, being such an upscale place, many of the restaurants dotted around the harbour area have earned a well-deserved reputation. Naturally for such a splendid Mallorcan port, seafood tends to dominate most of the menus.

Activities galore

Obviously being a well-established port, Puerto Andratx abounds in nautical related activities. The harbour itself has over 450 moorings in place, so sailing is a major pastime in this part of the island.

If you like a game of golf you’re in luck, because Andratx has its very own golf course. Just a short drive from Puerto de Andratx is the 18-hole championship course at Andratx Golf Club, one of the most challenging on the island. (The course’s 60 bunkers and seven lakes test even the finest golfers, as does the longest hole in Spain!)

The club’s location is spectacular too, offering splendid views of the rolling hills and deep blue sea. After a day on the greens, you can enjoy a relaxing meal in the clubhouse superb Italian restaurant.

Hiking is also popular in this part of the island – there are several hiking trails ranging from easy to challenging.

If culture rather takes your fancy, a visit to the Cultural Center of Andratx is an absolute must. Set in a dreamlike environment just a few minute’s drive away, the establishment features some of the finest contemporary art to be found anywhere in Mallorca.

Around Puerto Andratx

6km inland from the port lies the old town of Andratx. Narrow streets and traditional stone houses give the place an old world charm, and the fortress-like thirteenth century church of Santa Maria is well worth a visit.

The picturesque and tranquil coastal resort of Sant Elm lies nearby. From here you can enjoy a short boat ride to the uninhabited natural park island of Sa Dragonera.

The historic town of Calvia located at the foot of the spectacular Tramuntana Mountains is also a splendid local attraction, as are the beautiful villages of Banyalbufar and Estellencs, both clinging to the coastal cliffs offering splendid views over the sea.

Another lovely spot near to Puerto Andratx is Camp de Mar, a superb cove-like beach resort which boasts a quirky cafe lying out in the bay approached by a rather rickety wooden walkway built on stilts!

How to get to Puerto de Andratx

There is a direct Motorway route from Palma airport to the outskirts of Andratx, so Puerto Andratx is relatively easy to get to. A regular bus service connects to Andratx town, Palma, Camp de Mar and Sant Elm. There is also a regular ferry to Sant Elm.
